Safety Centre
Meeting someone new should feel good and safe. Here are the precautions worth taking, online and on a first date, and what Thymming does to protect you.
If you are in danger
Call the emergency services now. Once you are safe, keep the evidence (screenshots, messages) and report the person in the app and to the police.
- United Kingdom999 (emergency) · 101 (police, non-urgent)
- European Union (incl. Portugal)112
- Brazil190 (police) · 180 (women's helpline)
- Spain112 · 016 (gender-based violence)
Before you meet
- Talk here on Thymming for as long as you need. Be wary of anyone in a hurry to move to another app.
- Do not share your home address, workplace, bank details or documents.
- Have a video call before the first date: it confirms the person is who they say they are.
- Do a little research: their name and social media usually match what they tell you. A photo that looks too perfect can be checked with a reverse image search.
- Trust your instincts. If something feels off, you can stop the conversation at any time.
Signs of a scam
- They ask for money, gifts, gift cards or crypto, for any reason. Never send it, however convincing the story.
- They declare very strong feelings very quickly.
- They always have an excuse not to video call or meet.
- They tell you about emergencies: a sick relative, a trip gone wrong, a frozen account.
- They talk about investments or chances to "make money together".
- If you spot these signs, do not answer requests for money, and report the profile.
On the first date
- Meet somewhere public and busy, like a café or restaurant, and stay there.
- Get there and back on your own. Do not accept lifts or invitations home on a first date.
- Tell a friend where you are going, when and with whom, and agree to text them halfway through.
- Keep your phone charged.
- Watch what you drink and never leave your drink unattended.
- You can leave whenever you want, without explaining.
Consent and respect
- Consent is a clear, freely given "yes" that can be withdrawn at any time.
- "No" is a complete answer. Silence or hesitation is not a "yes".
- Agreeing to a date is not agreeing to anything else.
- Respect other people's boundaries as you would want yours respected.
What Thymming does to protect you
- Your photo only appears after a match, and after a person on our team has reviewed it.
- Your location is never shown: only an approximate distance.
- Block: the person stops seeing you everywhere and is not told they were blocked.
- Report: every report is seen by a person on our team. Cases involving minors are handled first.
- Pause your profile: leave search without losing your matches or conversations.
- Two-factor authentication (a code on your phone): protects your account even if someone gets into your email.
